Mid-Week Matters | Vol 7

💬 Schools OUT, Jade’s IN at CMR

It’s issue 7 of Mid-Week Matters, and before all of your Out of Offices come flooding into my inbox, I’ve got some news.

There’s a NEW starter at CMR – welcome to Jade Dunne!

And I’ve got two reasons why I’m delighted to tell you about our latest hire.

Firstly, Jade comes armed with some serious technical skills that are crucial to our industry. She’s got half a decade at Capita and another three years in perm/temp logistics recruitment. Serious experience, both technically and commercially.

Secondly, that’s the third hire of 2025 for CMR. And yes, that’s in large part thanks to our clients, friends and the market itself.

With all of the legislation and changes happening, businesses in this sector are still pressing forward. They’re either planning for their next hire, or are open to candidates with the perfect skills, even if there isn’t a live job.

This is why I love this sector! It’s resilient to a tee. And it’s going nowhere.

Now, onto some other bits.

🏛 ERB: The Early Headlines

BIG noise around the Employment Rights Bill over the last few months. And for good reason.

I think we’re all for improving working conditions for people, particularly those who sit at the fringes of our market. Make no mistake though, it’s a monumental piece of legislation.

So, what’s actually included around low-hours and zero-hours contracts?

✅ Workers could gain the right to request guaranteed hours, but only if they ask

✅ Cancel a shift with less than 48 hours’ notice, and you may still need to pay

✅ If passed, these changes wouldn’t take effect until 2027 at the earliest

What does it mean in practice?

If you’re running payroll, hiring contractors, or advising clients on workforce models, it’s worth thinking about the knock-on effects now. As we’ve seen before, when rules change, the spotlight usually lands on the umbrella space pretty quickly.

It’s not law yet, but the tone is clear. More protection, more transparency, and more accountability.

More details here.

If that’s three yeses (or one yes to the last question), you’ll be seeing CMR soon. Although there’s some rain forecasted, the rolling Cheshire countryside is set to welcome 100 leaders from across the industry (plus Emile Heskey!). .
